About Us

Built in 1870, Emerson Hall honors the legacy of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the influential 19th-century Unitarian minister, philosopher, and public lecturer whose poetry is today taught in literature classes throughout the US. It was originally built as a Universalist church by a congregation seeking a more central location from its rural origins in what is now known as North Stamford.

The building is a rare remaining example of English Country Gothic architecture and houses a treasure trove of iconic features and installations, including several fine examples of stained glass, classic wood work finishings, a loft that curves in a sweeping embrace, and a towering exposed beam cathedral ceiling. Its bell tower reaches toward the sky, while its classic facade hugs the main entryway to the Sanctuary within.

Today Emerson Hall is one of three buildings that are home to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Stamford. It sits at the busy corner of Forest and Bedford Streets, where Stamford’s growing restaurant row terminates at Latham Park and the historic Avon Theater. It sits on the National Register of Historic Places and Stamford’s Downtown Historic District.

Emerson Hall and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation have a rich history of hosting musical concerts, visual exhibitions, theatrical productions, poetry readings, dance, culturally rich education programs, and countless community service events. It is known by performers and speakers of all styles for its stellar acoustics and soft, contemplative atmosphere. In daylight, atural light pours through sideline stained glass windows. At night, the windows shine a soft glow from within.

Incorporated as a non profit organization in September 2023, the promise of Emerson Hall Foundation is to preserve this iconic building to serve both the needs of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation and those of our city’s artistic, cultural, and community voices.
